Functional foods: sound science or marketing hype?

The food industry is increasingly trying to sell us "functional foods" such as probiotics, prebiotics and superfoods, on the promise that they will improve health. What is the science behind these products? Do they work, or is it all just marketing hype? What will the future hold in this area?

Professor Bob Rastall, Head of Food Biosciences at Reading University, analysed a shopping basket of such products and answered your questions at this Café RSC discussion.
