Dr Peter Machin

Peter Machin was awarded a first class Honours Degree and PhD (1974) in organic chemistry from Imperial College, London. He then spent more than 30 years in drug discovery at major pharmaceutical companies. He has held a number of senior positions; at Roche as head of chemistry in the UK, then at SmithKline Beecham as Vice President of Discovery Chemistry Europe and most recently, as Global Senior Vice President of Discovery Research Chemistry at GlaxoSmithKline.
He has broad experience of lead discovery and optimisation through to development and has overseen the identification of a significant number of clinical candidates and two marketed drugs. He is currently an independent Consultant in Drug Discovery.
Peter Machin is a Fellow of the RSC and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He became an RSC Council Member in July 2007 and RSC Honorary Treasurer in July 2009.
