Dr Derek Stevenson

After leaving school (at 16) Derek Stevenson worked as an analytical chemist in the agrochemical industry at Fisons Cambridge and Shell Sittingbourne for 6 years. This was followed by 2 years at Westminster Medical School undertaking research in drug pharmacokinetics. Concurrently he did ONC, HNC and Grad RSC on day release. He then did a PhD at the University of Surrey in the Robens Institute as a case student with ICI Pharmaceuticals. He eventually became Head of the Analytical Centre in Robens and Senior Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry, now within the Biochemistry Division at Surrey.

He has extensive experience of PhD supervision and examination. He has over 70 publications, mainly in chromatography and sample preparation and has had over 40 invitations to lecture both abroad and in the UK. 

He has been a member of the Analytical Division Council including a term as Vice President and was a member of the executive committee of the Chromatographic Society including 2 years as president. In 2007 he was awarded the RSC Analytical Separations medal. His main interests remain separation science for biomedical and environmental analysis.

Derek is married with 4 children in their twenties and enjoys football, running and walking
