New ChemSoc formed in China

01 March 2008

In a joint celebration of the launch of a new RSC ChemSoc in Beijing, and to herald the arrival of the Chinese New Year, the Students' Union of the Chemistry Department, Tsinghua University, put on a show to remember.

As a prelude to the launching ceremony, a symposium was held to introduce students to the scope of research interests from academics in the department.

The launch was a huge event, incorporating a range of music and dance acts aimed at promoting the chemical sciences and recruiting new members to the ChemSoc.

A participating professor highlighted the importance of holding such events:
"A year's busy work on researching distances us somewhat from our students. These events give us the opportunity to bridge to them."

A student reacted: "This has given us a really good mood for the New Year! Thanks to the RSC - their support really played an important role."

This is the second ChemSoc to be established in China. Gemma Crawley, Member Networks Manager, hopes that these will be the first of many international ChemSocs: "We hope these ChemSocs will help build links between international students, the RSC and the RSC's international sections."
