Martin and Synge's work on the development of gas chromatography formed the basis of processes which are widely used today in research and industry. The event was a huge success attended by around eighty guests including the Deputy Lord and Lady Mayoress of Leeds and members of both the Martin and the Synge families.

The event began with a joint lecture by Professors Keith Bartle and Peter Myers during which the audience was able to watch re-mastered video footage of the two scientists. Past RSC President, Professor Tony Ledwith, unveiled the plaque which was later installed in its permanent location in the foyer of the building.
