Discovery of Structure of DNA

1 May 2003, King's College London

The Historic Chemical Landmark to commemorate the work of scientists at King's College towards the discovery of the structure of DNA took place on the 1 May 2003. A summary of the work which was performed, and advances in the field since, was given by Professor Julia Goodfellow, chief executive of the BBSRC. Two of the original members of the research team, Ray Gosling and Herbert Wilson, were also present to unveil the plaque.

The plaque, which is mounted on the front of the Strand Campus of King's College, reads:

Near this site Rosalind Franklin, Maurice Wilkins, Raymond Gosling, Alexander Stokes and Herbert Wilson performed experiments that led to the discovery of the structure of DNA. This work revolutionised our understanding of the chemistry behind life itself.
