The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) commemorated 170 years of scientific publishing at a ceremony in Cambridge on 8th December to coincide with the first publication of the Memoirs of the Chemical Society in 1841.

The ceremony, which marked the official end to International Year of Chemistry, was attended by most of the staff from the RSC as well as the honorary officers of the Society and Council and representatives of the Mid-Anglia Local Section.

After the welcome by RSC Chief Executive, Dr Robert Parker, James Milne, Interim Managing Director, Publishing gave a presentation on the history of chemical publishing over the years to the current year. This was then followed by a presentation on the highlights of International Year of Chemistry by the President, Professor David Phillips.    Professor Graham Richards, Chair of the RSC Publishing Board was then invited to unveil the blue plaque.  Professor Richards thanked staff for making one of the fast growing publishing organisations which now publishes more than 1,000 articles a month across more than 30 scientific journals.

The plaque was installed at the entrance to the RSC Cambridge offices on the Science Park.  The citation on the plaque reads:
