The work of Bragg and Bragg in X-ray Crystal Structure Analysis

1st July 2003, University of Leeds

The Historic Chemical Landmark to commemorate the work of W H Bragg and W L Bragg for their work in the development of X-ray Crystal Structure Analysis was honoured in University House, University of Leeds on Tuesday, 1 July 2003. Among the guests who attended were Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Wilson, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Alison Lowe and relatives of the scientists, Lady Margaret Heath and Dr Charles Bragg.

Emeritus Professor Durward W J Cruickshank gave a very informative lecture about the work of the Braggs entitled: W H Bragg and W L Bragg X-rays and crystal structure, 1912-1915; the continuing impact on chemistry.

Lady Margaret Heath gave an amusing talk on memories of her father, W L Bragg and then unveiled the plaque which read:

Near this site, between 1912 and 1914, Sir William H. Bragg and his son Sir W. Lawrence Bragg carried out research that led to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915. Their work formed the basis of crystal structure determination by X-ray diffraction which has made an outstanding contribution to chemical science.
