Fluoride controversy
In some areas of England and Wales, fluoride is added to water to raise the amount of fluoride to a specified level to help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride occurs naturally in water but levels are not sufficient to strengthen teeth. The decision to add fluoride lies with the district health authorities. Water companies who add fluoride must ensure that the concentration meets standards based on EU law. Too much fluoride in your diet may be harmful resulting in mottling of the teeth and at high levels it may also affect the skeleton and ligaments. At the levels used however, there is little cause for concern to public health.
