Where does our tap water come from?

Two thirds of drinking water in England and Wales comes from surface water - sources such as reservoirs, lakes and rivers. The rest of the water comes from ground water - underground geological formations that store rain water. This water is then treated at treatments works before travelling through the water mains, often over substantial distances, to reach your home.
