New Journal on Biorefineries
John Wiley & Sons and SCI have
launched a new journal which will hold particular interest for those working in
green chemistry or related fields. The Biofuel, Bioproducts and Biorefining
Journal or Biofpr and its supporting website promise to be a definitive source
of information on sustainable products, fuels and energy.
Linda Adams, Secretary for
Environmental Protection, directed the Department of Toxic Substances Control
(DTSC) to lead a Green Chemistry Initiative. DTSC will lead Cal/EPA's
departments to fundamentally change how government and business work together
to deal with waste before it is generated. This new approach is similar to
measures adopted by the European Union and the Canadian government to encourage
greater manufacturer responsibility.
Environmentally Friendly 'Switchable' Surfactants
Researchers at Queen's University in
Canada have developed a switchable surfactant that is activated by carbon
dioxide and deactivated by air. This can be used to mix and un-mix oil and
water on demand, an extremely useful tool for the oil industry and many other
applications. Unlike other switchable surfactants available this does not
require metals or acid, and provides a cheap, non-toxic and environmentally
benign separation method. For more information see

An Inconvenient Truth
An Inconvenient Truth, the climate
change documentary by Al Gore that took the cinema-going public by storm
earlier this year, has now been released on DVD. The film is based on a public
lecture that Al Gore has delivered around the world, which looks at scientific
evidence behind global warming. For more information on the film and the
accompanying book see

Green Chemistry and the Consumer Project
The Green Chemistry and the Consumer
project is an exciting venture from the GCN, aimed at delivering knowledge and
understanding of Green Chemistry to consumers and retailers, and covers all
chemical-dependant consumer products including clothing, furnishing, electronic
goods, personal care products and food. The project also aims to engage
representatives from throughout the entire supply chain and to encourage direct
involvement of the retail trade in green chemistry research.

Websites for Schools
The Greener Industry
Website has been developed by the CIEC in conjunction with the GCN, CIA,
EPSRC, Rhodia and the RSC and aims to increase students' and teachers'
knowledge of contemporary practice in the chemical and associated industry.
The Sustain-ed Website This website introduces the themes of
sustainable development and provides case studies from the chemical industry.
National Non-Food Crops Centre
The NNFCC's remit includes the use of
all plant-derived materials, derivatives and by-products for commercial
non-food purposes, with the exception of plants grown for ornamental purposes
and forestry grown solely for timber.
