Greenchemistry Centre for Industry The Green Chemistry Centre for Industry can provide competitive,
tailor-made solutions, which will enable chemical production that is more
profitable, less wasteful, less damaging to the environment and more socially
acceptable.
Green Chemistry and the
Consumer
The Green Chemistry and the Consumer
project is an exciting venture from the GCN, aimed at delivering knowledge and
understanding of Green Chemistry to consumers and retailers, and covers all
chemical-dependant consumer products including clothing, furnishing, electronic
goods, personal care products and food. The project also aims to engage
representatives from throughout the entire supply chain and to encourage direct
involvement of the retail trade in green chemistry research. Marks and Spencer,
the Royal Society of Chemistry and GlaxoSmithKline have all now agreed to fund
the project for the forthcoming year. One of the main outputs from the project
will be a quarterly newsletter (see below), which describes current greener
chemical information in a way that is comprehensible to a widely non-technical
audience. Readers will be informed of recent advances in chemistry applicable
to greener chemical products, implications of relevant legislation will be
explained in a more understandable manner and other related topics, such as
Green Chemistry research opportunities, will be communicated.
Opportunities to get involved in the
Green Chemistry and the Consumer project are outlined in the

The GCN is holding annual events in
connection with this theme, which are also targeted at relevant trade
associations, academics and industrialists. See below for presentations from
the workshops. There are also plans to develop a dedicated website to support
the newsletter and act as a technology brokerage facility, as well as
initiating an awards programme for Greener Consumer Products.

A new collaboration with Boots the
Chemists has resulted in the development of an outreach activity based on the
chemistry behind commonly used personal care products, and the steps that can
be taken to improve their sustainability over the lifecycle. As part of a pilot
phase of work an interactive exercise on the lifecycle of soap was created,
which can be viewed at
www.greenconsumerproducts.co.uk. This was trialled during
science week at a series of workshops at the annual Discovery Days
exhibition, attended by approx. 2000 school children and members of the public
in York.
The GCN is currently developing a

facility
