Chemistry of Multinuclear Sandwich Complexes
The sandwich structures are one of the ubiquitous molecular designs for metal complexes. Most of sandwich complexes contain a mono- or dinuclear metal moiety between cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon ligands. On the other hand, it had been difficult to synthesize a stable sandwich complex in which more than two metal atoms are fixed between two parallel unsaturated hydrocarbon ligands. Recently, we revealed that multinuclear sandwich complexes exist as stable, isolable molecules. Linear and cyclic
-conjugated unsaturated hydrocarbons act as excellent template binders for a metal chain or a metal sheet. Some examples of the isolated multinuclear sandwich complexes are shown in Figure 1. These findings expand the molecular concept of metal sandwich complexes.
