Groningen

Groningen is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. It plays an important role as the main urban and cultural centre of this part of the country. Chosen as the best city of Holland 2005-2007, Groningen offers a wide selection of terraces, cafés and restaurants, as well as places of interest such as museums and historical buildings.

The University of Groningen, the second oldest university in the Netherlands, has a rich academic tradition which dates back to 1614. The university educated the first female student and the first astronaut in the history of the country, the first president of the European Bank and a Nobel prize winner.

Travel

The city is well connected by rail to other major cities in the Netherlands and also to Amsterdam's Schipol airport. VLM operate direct flights to Groningen from Schipol, London City and Aberdeen airports. Groningen is very much adapted to those who want to get around without a car as it has an extensive cycle network, good public transport and a large pedestrianised zone in the city centre.
