Oxidative DNA Damage

28 March 2008
Research and Engineering Centre, Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland

Introduction

Oxidative damage in the human DNA can occur from a variety of sources including photoionisation (e.g. sunlight), chemical oxidation (e.g. styrene) and attack by reactive oxygen species. Mutations in the DNA have potential implications on mutagenesis, disease and ageing.

Aims of the workshop were:

  • to investigate the different causes of reactants which lead to oxidative DNA damage in the human body
  • to investigate the types of oxidative DNA damage that occur
  • to identify tools and techniques that allow research into the biological characteristics of these diseases
  • to discuss the development of early diagnosis techniques and tools for disease monitoring
