Integration of drug discovery and systems biology

28 November 2008
Geological Society, Burlington House, London

Introduction

This workshop is the third of a series entitled "Analytical Tools for the Life Sciences". This series is aimed to bring together researchers from chemistry and life science to discuss problems and opportunities and to facilitate collaborations between the two disciplines. The programme will feature speakers from both disciplines and there will be plenty of networking opportunities. All lectures will be suitable for researchers in chemical science, biology, engineering and medicine.

Since the end of 2004, marked by the appearance of PubChem and ChEBI, there has been a revolution in the accessibility of bioactive chemical information. This now unifies several areas of biology:

  • Small-molecule drug discovery that has recently expanded beyond human disease and antibacterial targets into tropical diseases.
  • Systems chemical biology using small molecules as perturbogens.
  • metabolomics that encompasses endogenous small molecules and their interactions with cognate enzymes or receptors.

All these areas join at the level of compound structure and interactions with proteins.

Attendance to the workshops is free of charge, but all participants are asked to register in advance.
