Other information:
1) Novel rapid analytical approaches, particularly surface analysis techniques, allow trace evidence data to be acquired much more quickly than ever before. Items can be shown to be contaminated with drugs of abuse or explosives within a matter of seconds. But how is this mass of data best interpreted and presented to Courts of Law given that many of these compounds may now be considered to be environmental contaminants?
2) Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry has been applied to the analysis of both drugs and explosives in an effort to acquire evidence concerning their origins. Associated materials, however, such as packing materials, tapes, or wires may prove to be equally, or even more, valuable in establishing a link between an exhibit and a suspect.
Richard Sleeman studied for his PhD in the Organic Geochemistry Unit at the University of Bristol. He developed an interest in rapid analytical methodologies using little or no sample preparation by means of tandem mass spectrometry. These techniques found application in the forensic detection of traces of drugs of abuse, and in the detection of explosives for security applications. He is now the Scientific Director of Mass Spec Analytical Ltd.
