Organisation schemes
A number of organisations have developed schemes offering the chance to gain experience in different environments to develop a variety of skills. These include teaching opportunities, industrial placements and public engagement practice.

Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme (UAS)
This scheme began in 2002 - rewards science, technology, engineering and maths undergraduates with course credit for participating in a project in which they work as teaching assistants and act as role models in local schools. The scheme provides an opportunity for final year undergraduates to gain first hand experience of science education and provides teachers with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic assistant who offers practical help and engages students in science and mathematics.
Student Associates scheme
A three-year programme, funded by the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) and delivered by 47 providers throughout England. It gives students in higher education the opportunity to work in schools and colleges, gaining knowledge and experience of teaching and learning by supporting teachers and young people.
Science and Engineering Ambassadors programme
Launched by the DfES and DTI in January 2002.The programme aims to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by providing enthusiastic, volunteers from industry and higher education to work which young people and teachers in schools.
The Year in Industry scheme
A scheme run by the Royal Academy of Engineering for gap-year students to gain pre-university experience of industry backed by comprehensive 'off the job' training.
EPSRC - Public engagement programme
Part of the EPSRC Public Engagement programme involves a number of initiatives, often working with other organisations, to promote links between scientists and schools and to contribute to the development of educational resources - eg the Pupil Researcher Initiative and Researchers in Residence.
