Chemistry now! 11–14 is one of three pupils’ books that cover the requirements of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 Science, the Common Entrance Examination syllabus at 13+ and equivalent junior science courses. This is a weightier edition in comparison to the original, first published in 1999, and it continues to use clear text and colourful illustrations and photographs to explain fully the concepts and encourage background reading.

In this new edition, the chapters have been reorganised to reflect the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority’s (QCA) schemes of work, with additional information on the tests for gases and compounds, mixtures and elements as well as expanded chapters on Rocks and weathering and The rock cycle. One of the book’s aims is ‘to develop the scientific literacy of all pupils so that they are equipped to assess, evaluate and make decisions on issues with a scientific element in their future lives’ and this is achieved for the more able pupil. Throughout there are numerous questions that test a range of skills, including comprehension, application, analysis and evaluation, which may be used as a basis for class work or homework.

The photocopiable experimental instructions are still within the teacher’s resource book, which detracts from their usefulness within the classroom. The technical instructions required for these practicals are risk assessed and can be found within the appropriate teacher’s resource book chapter, which could be tiresome for the busy technician. Chapter-listed IT activities are given at the back of this support publication. Also, a 13+ question bank and Key Stage 3 test with answers are included together with an innovative cross reference for ‘Meeting the demands of the National Curriculum and Common Entrance Examination at 13+’.

This new edition has improved its overall able student friendliness and is worth considering if you are looking to buy a new 11–14 chemistry textbook. The book would also make a creditable library purchase.
