ChemNet, the Royal Society of Chemistry's (RSC) network for students aged 16-18 studying chemistry in school and further education, completed its first calendar year at the end of 2007. Over the past year ChemNet membership has grown to more than 2000 students from over 700 schools and colleges throughout the UK. As ChemNet members, students and the chemistry teachers in these institutions, receive chemistry and careers materials every month, including copies of Chemistry World  and InfoChem.  

In 2007 over 600 ChemNet members attended 37 events which included industrial visits to places such as the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant and pharmaceutical plants operated by GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca. Other ChemNet members have enjoyed lectures at universities, including Birmingham and Hertford, and groups of students visiting Liverpool University have taken part in hands-on chemistry workshops on making ferrofluids. ChemNet executive Dr Robert Bowles told Education in Chemistry, 'More events are being planned for 2008 so that members will not need to travel too far. There will also be a bigger and better Meet the universities  event, more industry visits and more university trips'.
