Synthesis and spectroscopy

Synthetic chemistry is used to generate new products. In turn, these can be used in further reactions to create a wider variety of products, with uses ranging from food flavourings to the production of nylon.

In this activity, students carry out an end-to-end synthesis; from preparing and isolating their starting material to the purification and full characterisation of the product using a range of spectroscopic techniques.
