Chemistry studies at the University of Sussex

The RSC is aware of the uncertainty regarding the future of the chemistry department at the University of Sussex.  On 12 March 2006 the university issued a press release stating that as part of an overall initiative to strengthen research and teaching in the biosciences area there are plans to cease offering chemistry degrees.  Consequently only programmes in chemical biology would be made available.  The university has subsequently indicated that no final decision has been made, and that an urgent review of the plans will take place over the next 6 - 7 weeks.

If the plans are approved, there will be a reduction in the number of academics within the chemistry department.  The university has however indicated that it is committed to providing a full teaching programme for all current students through to completion.
