Applying for the MChemA

The examination is in three parts.

  • Part A is a three-hour examination paper on the theory of general analytical chemistry.
  • Part B covers the applications of analytical chemistry and comprises two three-hour papers.
  • Part C provides the opportunity for you to demonstrate specific abilities that you possess in the application of the core knowledge and an opportunity to demonstrate your career experience.

You can register for the MChemA as an Associate Member of the RSC (AMRSC), and take the Part A and Part B examinations. You must be a Member (MRSC) or Fellow (FRSC) by the time you apply for Part C.

Candidates who have been awarded the NVQ Level 5 in Analytical Chemistry can claim exemption from the Part A examination.

Candidates with an appropriate post graduate qualification (MSc in Analytical Chemistry) can claim exemption from Part A of the MChemA Examination. These courses are often amended and updated, and you should contact the RSC for advice on whether your qualification meets the requirements.

For Part B your Counsellors also need to submit a supporting form.

For Part C, you submit a Portfolio of Evidence to the RSC for formal assessment by the Examiners. If the Portfolio is deemed satisfactory, you may proceed to the one-day practical examination.
