Consultants advise companies and other organisations on issues that can't be dealt with easily by permanent staff. They can work in almost every field you can think of, from computing to marketing, environmental management, finance or personnel.

Consultants also work in a variety of ways, for example they might:

• carry out research for their client and produce a detailed written report on their findings
• work within a company to find a solution to a problem
• help the client make changes to improve their business
