The Chemistry of Climate Change

The issue of climate change frequently dominates the media and is perhaps the major factor that will affect the lives of young people today.

It is important that young people have a sound understanding of both the scientific principle behind, and the evidence for, climate change in order that they can make informed decisions as citizens on the subject. 

The RSC has developed a resource for both 14-16 and 16-18 year olds to support teachers of science and chemistry to deliver this important topic.

The material is split into student worksheets and accompanying teachers' notes. It aims to: 

  • describe some of the research undertaken
  • show how the chemical sciences can contribute to our understanding of the challenges of climate change
  • enable students to use their chemical knowledge in this familiar, yet perhaps not particularly well-understood, context
  • equip students to better understand the news and media reports which they see
  • inspire students to study the chemical sciences further themselves.
