Bedfordshire
Three new Chemistry at Work events took place in Bedfordshire in March at Dame Alice Harpur School, Bedford; The Challney High School, Luton and Queensbury School, Dunstable. Organiser Derek Jones of Bedfordshire and Luton Education Business Partnership assembled a varied list of presenters - some new to Chemistry at Work and some old faithfuls. Some attended all three events, others just one or two.
Among the newcomers were:
- Arup, who explained how chemical contamination can be cleaned from 'brown land' to make it suitable for building
- Acer Snowmec, who make artificial snow for indoor ski slopes
- Luton Borough Council Trading Standards, who explained how soft toys are tested for flame resistance and other safety factors
- Danisco Cultor, who described how soft drinks are carbonated and flavoured
Old favourites included:
- Martyn Berry's presentation on hydrogen-fuelled vehicles
- Averil MacDonald who described how to make your first million through polymers with unusual properties
- Salama Kaswani (and her horse), who showed how the horse acts as a recycling machine.
