Students at Chemistry at Work event in Portsmouth
Rain and wind did not prevent 450 children from Portsmouth primary schools embarking upon HMS Warrior for a Chemistry at Work day on 7th March 2006.

The children were the first of over 1300 who attended during the three days of the event, which was organised by Portsmouth and South East Hampshire EBP.

The old warship contained workstations on the Gun and Cable Deck where the children worked in small groups and found out about how chemistry and science is used in the world outside school.

Presentations and hands-on activities included:

  • flour making by Bursledon Windmill

  • chromatography by the University of Portsmouth
  • using energy wisely by the Energy Efficiency Centre
  • sign printing by Intech
  • purifying water by Portsmouth Water
  •  the chemistry in dentistry and teeth by the Community Dental Service
  • and many more.

The contribution by the University of Portsmouth 'UP for It Juniors' was also excellent.

Children were treated to lunch with entertainment provided by a juggler, while presenters adjourned to the nearby Ship and Castle for a well-earned break.

The children were given part of the day to explore (under supervision) the interactive exhibits in 'Action Stations', including the climbing wall that starts leaning over as you use it.

This event has taken place over many years now and feedback from teachers was that they tried to return with new groups of children every year.
