South Shields
Stanhope Primary School was bedecked with RSC signs showing that a Chemistry at work event was taking place in the school on Tuesday 21st March 2006. The school was host to children from other local primary schools who enjoyed various presentations and hands-on activities:
- Kevin Thompson from Northumbrian Water talked about the supply and purification of water to our homes
- Alan Armstrong and James Maughan, from Trading Standards, invited children to carry out tests to find out if things were really made out of gold and silver
- Katy Fortune and Jessica Frankish, from South Tyneside Environmental Health, explained the nature of their work . with some examples best not mentioned!
- and Claire Dodd from InSCinc had all of the children making bath bombs.
The children were clearly enthusiastic and were very engaged in all of the presentations. They asked some impressive questions.
Teachers fully understood the importance of days such as this for the children. They could clearly see the value of showing children how chemistry is used in the world outside of schools and SATS exams; "this is why the study of chemistry and science is important".
The event was very well organised and thanks are due to South Tyneside EBP for their time and organisational skills: especially, Janet Woodhouse and Alison Morris.
The event at Stanhope is one of three that are being organised in this area by the EBP this year.
