June 2009 - Ionic Liquids

What are ionic liquids and what are their uses? What journals will help me to keep up to date with commercial developments in this area and who are the prominent companies?

As a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry you can access, FREE of charge, reliable full text e-books, journals and databases in the Virtual Library. For example:

From Knovel:

  • The Handbook of Solvents describes ionic liquids:
as molten salts which are fluid at room temperature, or close to room temperature

From Springer:

  • The book "Metal Catalysed Reactions in Ionic Liquids" Chapter 2 Ionic Liquids - Properties and Preparation gives the information: up to 1018 different ionic liquids may exist...Many organic cations, when matched with an appropriate anion, give rise to ionic liquids...At present the most frequently encountered type of cation is based on the 1,3-disubstituted imidazolium moiety...it can be relatively easy to modify the physical properties of an ionic liquid to match the requirements of a particular process...
  • Ionic liquids in electrochemical sensors Russian Journal of General Chemistry, Volume 78, Number 12 / December, 2008
  • Ionic liquids as new solvents of natural polymers Fibre Chemistry, Volume 40, Number 3 / May, 2008

From Engineering Village:

  • In the book "Special Distillation Processes" Ionic liquids are called "green" solvents...used in extractive
distillation, the "green" includes...(1) Negligible vapor pressure...don't pollute the product at the
top of the column...(4) Potential to be reused and recycled..
  • The database Chemical Business NewsBase ranks bibliographic records resulting from a word search by fields including company name, source journal title, country and industry top ranking were BASF, European Chemical News, Germany and specialty chemicals respectively.

From EBSCO's Business Source Corporate database there is full text access to:

  • European Chemical News.
  • a current company profile for BASF including revenue analysis, top competitors and major products and services
  • a current country profile for Germany

As part of the services of the Chemistry Search Service, we can supplement the information above with references retrieved from Chemical Abstracts, Scopus, and Web of Science.

Members can carry out their own high quality research from the Virtual Library simply by logging in to a resource with their membership number and password.
