CAS: 8001-79-4Properties: Pale-yellowish transparent, viscous liquid. A nondrying oil. D 0.945-0.965 (25/25C), saponification value 178, iodine value 85, fp -10C. Flash p 445F (229C), autoignition temp 840F (448C). Combustible. Soluble in alcohol, benzene, chloroform, dextrorotatory.
Derivation: Castor bean seeds, Ricinus communis (Brazil, India, the former U.S.S.R., U.S.). Cold-pressed for first grade medicinal oil; hot pressed for common qualities.
Uses: Plasticizer in lacquers, production of dibasic acids, lipsticks, polyurethane coatings etc
