Anti-harassment Legislation
In May 2006, Tony Blair gave an interview to the Sunday Telegraph. He accused anti-vivisection extremists of "stooping to appalling depths" and gave his reasons for supporting animal research.
The previous year new legislation was introduced - The Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (SOCPA) - which contains several clauses that aim to crack down on the threat posed by animal rights extremism.
The National Extremism Tactical Coordination Unit (NETCU) was also set up, one of their remits being to monitor animal rights protests.
