Duncan Bruce is Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of York, and his research interests centre around liquid crystals in one form or another. Current research topics include: halogen-bonded systems; bent-core and calamitic heterocyclic mesogens and their metal complexes; lyotropic studies of polycatenar mesogens; the biaxial nematic phase; nanoparticle-doped, nanostructured silicas.

My research interests focus principally on non-oxide materials such as nitrides and chalcogenides and in developing new inorganic nanomaterials. My work is driven by devising new synthetic routes and establishing structure-property relationships in fledgling families of solids and materials. Key areas include, for example, (a) sustainable energy materials – new lithium batteries and solid state hydrogen stores; (b) functional nanomaterials – new inorganic nanotubes and nanowires for electronic and sorption applications; (c) sustainable processing – novel microwave synthesis and processing techniques to both commercially important and new materials including superconductors, dielectrics, ceramics (both functional amd structural) and photonic glasses; (d) spintronics and photonics and (e) inorganic phosphors for flat screen display technology.

Jon Meegan is an employee of Cytec Engineered Materials, his research interests include the design, synthesis and characterisation of biologically inspired silica based nanomaterials, stress sensitive elastomers and developing the understanding of structure – property relationships in filled polymer systems and advanced composites.
Professor Harry L Anderson FRSC

Harry Anderson is a Professor of Chemistry at Oxford University. His research concerns the design and synthesis of molecular and supramolecular materials for optoelectronic applications, with particular emphasis on conjugated porphyrin oligomers and rotaxane architectures. He was awarded a RSC Corday-Morgan Medal in 2001 and the RSC Award for Materials Chemistry in 2003.

Fiona Meldrum is a Reader in the School of Chemistry, University of Bristol. Her research focuses on different aspects of crystal growth in synthetic and biological systems, and she has a particular interest in the application of biomimetic approaches to controlling crystallisation processes. Current research interests include controlling crystal morphologies using soluble additives and templates, crystallisation of inorganic and organic compounds in porous media and the synthesis and characterisation of crystalline materials with superior mechanical properties.

Graham Leggett is the EPSRC/RSC Professor of Nanoscale Analytical Science in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield. His research interests cover a variety of aspects of the chemistry of nanostructured materials. The use of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques, with a particular emphasis on the development of quantitative tools for the investigation of surface structure and reactivity, is a central theme in this work. He also has interest in the development of nanofabrication techniques, and in the application of these to the construction of highly miniaturised bioanalytical devices. An important recent achievement has been the development of scanning near-field photolithography (SNP), in which a near-field scanning optical microscope is used to write molecular structures as small as 9 nm into an organic monolayer.

Neil Champness is Professor of Chemical Nanoscience at the University of Nottingham. His research is concerned with molecular organization, including the understanding of solution-phase self-assembly processes, surface supramolecular assembly, and organization in the solid-state via crystal engineering. Particular targets of his work are guest molecular entrapment and nanostructure formation in solid, solution, or surface environments with an emphasis on applications in information storage and sustainable energy sources. He is a Senior Advisor to the British Council on matters relating to Science and Engineering, was awarded the RSC Corday-Morgan medal in 2006 and the Bob Hay lectureship by the RSC UK Macrocycles and Supramolecular Chemistry Group in 2005. He is currently chair of the Editorial Board of CrystEngComm and was the founding chairman of the RSC Chemical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Interest Group.

Professor Steve Yeates has over 20 years industrial experience working for ICI, Zeneca and Avecia Ltd in the area of specialty polymer chemistry. During that time he held a number of senior technical positions developing and implementing research strategy. Over the last 7 years in industry he developed a particular interest in organic semiconductors and inkjet printing for both industrial and SOHO applications. In November 2004 he was appointed to the full time academic position as Professor of Polymer Chemistry, within the Organic Materials Innovation Centre (OMIC) at the University of Manchester, the UK’s second largest chemistry department.

Colin Greaves is Professor of Solid State Chemistry in the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham and his research interests relate to the synthesis, structures and properties of new inorganic materials. Current research programmes are focused on unusual electronic behaviour (including superconductors and thermoelectric layered oxides), oxide ion conductivity, electrocatalysts, and magnetic (and multiferroic) materials.

Carol Stanier is the Editor of Journal of Materials Chemistry and Soft Matter, and has been involved in various cross-RSC projects. She studied for her degree at Sheffield University, with a one year placement at BASF in Germany. Her DPhil on the synthesis and chemical and physical properties of rotaxanes was acquired in Oxford under the supervision of Dr Harry Anderson. After this Carol spent some time working in publishing in Germany before joining the RSC to start Soft Matter in 2004.

Dr Matthew Thornton MRSC is an Industry Co-ordinator for the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining whose primary responsibility is to work on the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network and coordinate the British Composites Society board and Plastics and Rubber Division Board. Dr Thornton’s specialist areas are carbon-carbon composites, catalysis and nanomaterials.

John Patrick was latterly Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering at the University of Nottingham. Prior to this he was Professor of Carbon Science in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University. His research interests are carbon-based materials ranging from coal to coke, carbon –carbon composites. active carbons, carbon nanotubes and graphites, especially, the formation of these materials and tailoring the processing to meet specifications, their properties and performance in use. Now past the age for retirement from academe but still involved and advising on energy-related topics such as hydrogen storage, clean coal technology, carbon dioxide capture and storage, biomass/waste pyrolysis as well as metallurgical coke production and performance.
