RSC Activities in Australasia

RSC activities in Australasia are coordinated by eight RSC representatives in Australia and three in New Zealand.  

The RSC sponsors travel grants for PhD students in Australia and also the RSC Australasian Lecturer who visits up to 32 universities in Australia and 6 in New Zealand.  

Current RSC Australasian Lecturer

Prof Justin Gooding (School of Chemistry, University of New South Wales) has been awarded the 2012 Royal Society of Chemistry Australasian Lectureship. The lectureship is awarded annually to a distinguished Australian or New Zealand chemist. The recipient presents lectures at a wide range of locations in Australia and New Zealand during the one year tenure of the lectureship. The lectureship now has existed for more than 50 years, with Prof Gooding being the 52nd recipient.

Prof Gooding’s research lies at the boundaries between analytical, physical, synthetic chemistry and biochemistry.  His research focuses on the molecular level fabrication of surfaces to provide them with their desired level of functionality.  An example of an important outcome is in the biosensing area where the surface recognition capability provides a controlled surface for electron transfer studies and provides surfaces compatible with cellular systems.  

Prof Gooding has received substantial international recognition for his research which includes the recent announcement in Chemistry in Australia of his award of the Stokes Medal to be presented at the RACI Electrochemistry Division Conference in Perth in April.
