In March 2007, the Royal Society of Chemistry signed a five-year International Cooperation Agreement with the South African Chemical Institute (SACI) at the University of Witwatersrand.

The RSC has had a connection with South Africa for nearly 80 years and currently has two active international sections based in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
