Previous Events 2008
A list of some of the previous events held in the Thames Valley local section in 2008.
Lecture - 'Pretty, Pretty, Bang, Bang' (4th December 2008)
Families’ Lecture ‘Pretty, Pretty, Bang, Bang’ on the chemistry of fireworks, with refreshments of Coca Cola and mince pies provided. Comments from the audience were “Absolutely brilliant!” (yes, we did have an audience, the empty seats in front were a safety precaution).
Annual Dinner 2008 (26th September 2008)
The Annual Dinner was held at the Oxford Union Society with guest speaker Stephen Benn. After the Dinner presentations of long service awards were made to three Past Chairmen of the Section Dave Matkin, Mike Jenkins (pictured) and Mo Williams by Gemma Wood, RSC Members Services Manager.
The photo published in RSC News showed our guest speaker Stephen Benn being presented by Josh Roche, current President of the Union, with a photo of his father’s committee when Tony Benn was the President of the Oxford Union.
Kennet and Avon Canal Trip (25th June 2008)
John White reporting on the afternoon cruise on the Kennet and Avon Canal with tea and cakes.
The trip started from and returned to the Dundas Arms at Kintbury. This year we were without members of Chiltern and Middlesex Section who outdid us by organizing their own cruise, to St Petersburg, a destination which even if we had had the time would have been outside the capabilities of our horse! It was the tranquillity of our trip that was commented upon, but so that Chiltern and Middlesex do not feel superior and that we are ‘past it’ I am suggesting that for next year we challenge them to an afternoon go-cart racing!
