Access more with the RSC

The Royal Society of Chemistry's publishing programme is available to more scientists than ever before, thanks to the increasing popularity of consortia agreements. The RSC's sales teams are actively collaborating with groups of academic institutes and industrial organisations throughout the world, to ensure that each library has access to the widest range of research, for even better value for money. For example, since negotiations began, some institutes have more than doubled the number of journals to which they have access.

'Our journals offer the highest quality research from across the chemical sciences, from the established core areas to the interfaces with other disciplines such as biology and physics' comments Phil Abrahams, sales and customer services director at the RSC. 'Working closely with consortia enables us to bring this research to as broad an audience as possible.'

Ask your librarian which RSC journals you have access to . you might just be surprised!

Have grants - will travel!

Are you an author of articles published in RSC journals? Did you know that you are eligible to apply for funding from the RSC Journals Grants for International Authors Scheme, to enable you travel to other countries? A generous portion of the surplus generated by RSC publishing activities is made available to authors (with a recent record of publishing in RSC journals) who would like to travel to collaborate actively in research.

The grants, which have a maximum limit of £2000, are awarded to cover travel and subsistence. 'Access to the Journals Grants Travel Fund facilitates about thirty visits a year for specific international contacts between chemists world-wide,' says professor Edward Abel (RSC past president and chair of the RSC Travel Grants Committee). 'The RSC is to be greatly commended for making available funds that catalyse such valuable and much appreciated scientific interactions.' Authors from institutions as far afield as Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia and Spain have visited universities in Switzerland, Norway, USA, UK and Belgium respectively as a result of successful applications to the fund.

Members of the RSC can also apply for Jones Travelling Fellowships, which have similar objectives, to make overseas laboratory study visits.

Details of both schemes, which are organised and distributed by a single committee, can be found at the website.
