The MRS 2009 fall meeting, held in Boston, US, from 30 November to 4 December, saw the perfect opportunity for RSC Publishing to display its impressive portfolio of materials journals and books.

Visitors to the RSC booth picked up free copies of recently launched journals Nanoscale and Energy & Environmental Science, as well as the established Journal of Materials ChemistryChem Soc RevSoft Matter and CrystEngComm. RSC staff provided online demonstrations of exciting innovations, including ChemSpider - a free online service providing a structure centric community for chemists. Many visitors also entered the competition to win an iPod touch, and the lucky winner, drawn at random from the entries is Manuela Scarselli, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy.

Also, at this meeting RSC Publishing celebrated a successful 2009 in style with an evening reception. Guests were welcomed with refreshments and editors Robert Eagling, Philip Earis and Carol Stanier were on hand to answer questions and provide details regarding our exciting journal portfolio, including the recently announced Polymer Chemistry, which has its first articles available to view online now. Polymer Chemistry, a new peer-reviewed journal from RSC Publishing encompassing all aspects of synthetic and biological macromolecules, and related emerging areas, will launch early in 2010.

Also in 2010, Journal of Materials Chemistry will be celebrating its 20th year of publishing work of international significance on all aspects of materials chemistry. Look out for our special activities planned for 2010 to mark this momentous occasion!

Celebrations, celebrations!

Party Balloon
RSC Publishing starts the new year with a double celebration. The Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry (JAAS) marks 25 years of publishing by giving something back to the community. For the anniversary year, JAAS  introduces a new community blog, JAASNews, coordinated by Steven Ray from Indiana University, Bloomington, US. The blog will be in place early in 2010 on the JAAS  website. It will report news from the atomic spectroscopy community which isn't available in scientific journals, including recent happenings of note, recognition of recent rewards and humorous anecdotes.

Meanwhile, Lab on a Chip, the number one journal for micro and nanofluidic technologies celebrates its 10th anniversary. 'We are extremely pleased with the journal's achievements over the last 10 years', says Harp Minhas, editor of Lab on a Chip. The journal boasts an impact factor of 6.5, names George Whitesides as its editorial board chair and awards some of the most sought after prizes in the miniaturisation sector including the pioneers of miniaturisation prize. The 2009 prize was awarded at the ?TAS conference in Korea to Abe Lee of the University of California, Irvine, US, for his excellent research, academic achievements and major contributions to the lab on a chip community.

Important diary dates

2010 Calendar
A stellar line-up of plenary speakers in three great cities in July - have you added the dates of the 2010 International Symposia for Advancing the Chemical Sciences (ISACS) conferences to your diary? Poster abstract submission is now open for Challenges in Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology (San Francisco), Challenges in Physical Chemistry and Nanoscience (Budapest) and Challenges in Inorganic and Materials Chemistry (Hong Kong) - but don't delay as the deadline is 29th January. Registration is also open, and there are some great discounts available.

More Metallomics

Metallomics  is taking biometal science to the next level. With promising journal submissions taking place over its first year, 2010 will see Metallomics increase in frequency from 6 to 12 issues. Each month during 2010, the current issue will be freely available online to all readers. Free institutional online access to all issues published throughout 2009 and 2010 is available following a simple registration process.
