Chemical Hazards in Industry

Health and safety issues for all sectors of the chemical industries

Search All Fields

Text entered in the Search all fields text entry box (at the top of the search screen) will be searched for throughout all sections of the records. Chemical Hazards in Industry Online has a powerful facility to maximise the number of relevant records retrieved. Search terms are checked against a thesaurus containing tens of thousands of synonyms and common acronyms. Your search results will include records containing your search terms and also relevant terms from the Chemical Hazards in Industry Online thesauri.

For example, using Search all fields  text box and entering: Control of Substances Hazardous to Health will not only retrieve records which contain the phrase Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, but, also records which contain the acronym COSHH, or the index term COSHH.

This is especially useful when searching chemical names. For example, using the Search all fields text box and entering: MIBK will retrieve all records containing the acronym MIBK, plus all records containing its alternative chemical names according to the thesaurus. These include 4-methyl-2-oxopentane; 4-methylpentan-2-one; hexone; isopropylacetone; ketone, isobutyl methyl; methyl isobutyl ketone; and pentan-2-one, 4-methyl-. methyl isobutyl ketone; and pentan-2-one, 4-methyl-.

Wildcards and Boolean Operators

Words or phrases, including numerics, may be entered in this text box. Boolean operators (and, or, not) and the wildcard symbol (*) may also be used. Special characters are not searchable. The wildcard symbol * matches zero or more occurrences of any character.

For example, using the Search all fields text box and entering:Biolog* will retrieve records which include the word biologybiological and biologically

*chlor* will retrieve records containing the words chlorine, chlorobenzene, and 2,4-dichlorophenol.

A combination of the wildcard and Boolean operators may be used. For example: *chlor* and (*cancer or carcino*)

  • You can combine your free-text search with text entered in any of the other 8 text entry boxes on the search screen.
  • Boolean operators and the wildcard may be used in any of the text entry boxes.
  • Text entered in a given text entry box searches the content of the specified field only.
  • If you enter text in more than one of the text boxes an implied logical AND connects the text in each of the text entry boxes when a search is performed.

For example: If fire is entered in the Search all fields text box, assessment  is entered in the Article title search box and Kinsman, P. is entered in the Author name text box, then only records which contain the word assessment  in the title and an author Kinsman P. will be retrieved, and then only if the word fire occurs anywhere in the record.
