Restricting Search Results
The Advanced search screen contains 5 drop-down from which selections may be made and one square check box to restrict your search results. A further drop-down list at the bottom of the page may be used to define the number of hits to be displayed on each page of your search results. To select from a list, simply click on the required entry. Only one entry can be selected from each of the drop-down lists.
Publication year and latest update
Your search will automatically retrieve any item matching your search criteria and include items originally published from 1981 to date unless you select an entry from either or both of the publication year (search from or to) lists. For example, to retrieve items published in the years 1985 to 1990, select 1985 in the search from list and 1990 in the search to box.
To search items published only in the most recent year, select the first entry in the search from list, or opt to search the latest weekly update only.
To search only the latest update, click on the square check box labelled Search the latest update only. When this facility is active a tick appears in the check box. To deactivate, simply click again on the square check box.
Language of original article
In the Bibliographic Data section of the search screen, the drop-down list entitled Language of original article contains an alphabetical listing of languages. Your search will automatically retrieve any item matching your search criteria, including items originally published in any language, unless you select an entry from this list. All abstracts in the database are in English and titles have been translated from the original language where necessary.
Type of document
In the Bibliographic Data section of the search screen, the drop-down list entitled Type of document contains 4 entries (Any,Journal, Press Release, Book) which describe the type of the original document. Your search will automatically retrieve all document types unless you make a selection from this list.
Number of hits to be displayed
At the bottom of the search screen, the drop-down list entitled Number of hits to be displayed contains 4 entries (5, 10, 20 and All) which define the number of titles matching your search criteria that are to be displayed on each page of search results. The results of your search will automatically be displayed as 10 titles per page unless you select an alternative entry from the list. You may access these additional pages of hits from the first page of search results. Information on how to select hits from the hit list for full record display is given in the help topic The Search Results Screen.
