Searching Bibliographic Data

The search screen provides 5 text entry boxes for the searching of the bibliographic data of the database records. The boxes enable searching of the following fields:

  • Article title
  • Author name
  • Author affiliation
  • Journal title
  • ISSN

In addition, 2 drop-down lists are provided: one for the selection of Language of original article, and the other for selecting the Type of document.

Article title
Text entered in the Article title text entry box will search only the titles of the records. All titles are in English, and have been translated from their original language where necessary. Further relevant information on searching Article titles is given in the help topic Searching Using Free Text.

Author name
Author names must be searched by entering the surname first, and optionally followed by the initial(s) of their first names. When searching author names with initials of their first name, a space must be entered between the surname and initial, and between each initial. For example:
Smith A.
Smith A. G.
Moniuszko-Jakoniuk J.
Chen, C.-Y.

Entering A Smith or A. Smith will not produce any hits. However, entering Smith* will retrieve all records containing an author whose surname is Smith, regardless of the initial(s) of their first names.

Author affiliation
This is the affiliation and address of the first author. Enough information is given for the location to be identified unambiguously. Generally, it includes the ORGANISATION, such as a university or company, and the DIVISION, such as school, department, etc. The rest of the address gives the town or city, state or province, postal code and country. Care should be taken to observe the form of the standard abbreviations used in this field when entering text in the Author affiliation text box. For example:
Div.
Dept.
Univ.
CA (for the state of California)

Journal title
Journal titles must be searched by entering their standard abbreviated forms and not the full journal title. Care should be taken to include the punctuation (stops and commas) as in the standard abbreviated title. For example, entering Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol. in the Journal title text box will retrieve records from Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology.

ISSN
The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an 8-character code, which uniquely identifies a journal. You may enter an ISSN in the text box either with or without the hyphen that usually appears in the ISSN between the fourth and fifth digits.
For example, to find records from the journal Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, which has the ISSN 0041-008X, enter either 0041008X  or 0041-008X  in the text box.
A listing of journal titles and their ISSNs are given in the Journal Source List
