Potential dependence of the non-linear polarizability of an Au(110) electrode

C. Bilger and B. Pettinger

The second harmonic generation (SHG) anisotropy of an Au(110) electrode has been studied over a wide potential range varying from -600 mV, where the surface is micro-faceted, to the unreconstructed surface at 600 mV. The interference SHG anisotropy (ISHGA), a new approach which allows one to measure directly the non-linear polarizability of the surface was used. The potential dependence of the symmetry components is discussed. A previously proposed model for the anisotropy of the Au(110) surface could be confirmed. Though rather weak, a quadrupole contribution has also been measured, showing a significant potential dependence.
