Synthesis and ion-exchange properties of thorium tungstate: separation of La3+ from Ba2+, Sr2+, Ca2+, and Y3+ and of VO2+ from Fe3+ and Mn2+

Moshin Qureshi and Syed Ashfaq Nabi

A number of samples of thorium tungstate have been synthesized. One of the most stable samples has been extensively studied and its formula has been postulated as Th(OH)2(HWO4)2,nH2O on the basis of chemical composition, pH-titrations, and i.r. spectroscopy. Its utility has been demonstrated by determining the distribution coefficients of 26 metal ions. Separations of LaIII from BaII, SrII, CaII, and YIII, and of VIV from FeIII, MnII, and CrIII have been achieved quantitatively on columns of this sample.
