Organometallic derivatives of aryl bromides 2a–10a have been coupled with aryl dihalides 11–16 in the presence of PdCl₂(dppb) catalyst to produce symmetrical bridged oligophenylenes 17–31 and 33 that contain five to ten conjugated benzene rings with one to four dialkylmethylene bridges; these products show useful solubility, high quantum efficiency of fluorescence and good photochemical stability.
