Molecular recognition in chemomechanical polymers

Hans-Jörg Schneider and Kazuaki Kato

Large motions in hydrogels with suitable binding elements can selectively be triggered by specific compounds in the surrounding medium. Particularly promising is the possible cooperativity between different effector compounds, leading to chemically triggered logical AND gates and to the detection of otherwise silent effectors. Downscaling of the gel particles leads to large enhancements in response speed and sensitivity.
