Effects of -substituents (R) on the redox behaviour of cyclic nitroxyl radicals, used as spin probes as well as antioxidants, have been investigated by using electrochemical techniques. The electron-donating substituents caused negative shifts in the one-electron oxidation and reduction potentials of the nitroxyl radicals, while the substituents with electron-withdrawing effect behaved reversely.

Emerging Area

Synthetic strategies for the preparation of gem-dihydroperoxide and perketal derivatives

N-Terminal blocked tryptophan derivatives like melatonin or tryptophan residues in peptides are easily nitrosated at the nitrogen atom of the indole ring to give the corresponding N-nitrosotryptophan derivatives. This article provides a comprehensive view of the synthesis, chemical properties, and detection methods of this class of N-nitroso compounds of potential importance in biological systems.

Perspective

N-nitrosotryptophan derivatives

In this paper Jernej Iskra and colleagues review the recent developments in the synthesis of  -substituted hydroperoxides.  -Substituted hydroperoxides are interesting compounds due to their chemistry and bioactivity and as intermediates for the synthesis of other peroxides, of which cyclic peroxides are of major importance. Although the emphasis of this report will be on the derivatives of gem-dihydroperoxides, perketals, as well as the less studied nitrogen and sulfur derivatives, will also be covered.
