5  Immobilisation of chiral catalysts: easy recycling of catalyst and improvement of catalytic efficiencies

Choong Eui Song

The immobilisation of homogeneous chiral catalysts is usually used to facilitate the separation of relatively expensive catalysts from reaction mixtures and their recycling. In addition to this practical merit, it has recently been reported that the immobilisation of a catalyst can also positively influence catalytic performance (increase in catalytic activity, stability and chemo- and enantioselectivity). Furthermore, albeit in rare cases, increased activity and selectivity have been observed upon reuse. In this review, such positive effects of immobilisation on catalytic efficiencies are discussed in terms of site isolation effect, confinement effect, cooperation effect of support backbone, and ionic liquid effect, etc., with the aim to understand as to how such effects lead to positive changes in catalytic properties.
