Russell Cox is Professor of Organic and Biological Chemistry at the University of Bristol, UK. He studied for his B.Sc and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Durham, UK, and then moved to Alberta, Canada, to work with Professor John Vederas FRS. This was followed by a short post doctoral fellowship at the John Innes Centre, Norwich, with Professor David Hopwood FRS. He then joined the faculty at the University of Bristol in 1996. His research interests focus on the chemistry and biology of polyketide biosynthesis in bacteria and fungi - especially iterative systems and non-canonical modular systems. He has experience of a wide range of techniques as applied to natural products chemistry, including molecular biology, enzymology, microbiology, analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, synthetic chemistry and synthetic biology. He is also chair of the organising committee for the RSC international conference series Directing Biosynthesis.
