Diamine ligands in copper-catalyzed reactions
David S. Surry and Stephen L. Buchwald,  Chem. Sci., 2010, 1, 13
DOI: 10.1039/c0sc00107d

The use of diamine ligands has allowed Cu-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions to be performed under mild conditions and endowed these reactions with significantly increased substrate scope. In this review the development of these methods and their applications in pharmaceutical research, natural products synthesis and materials science are described.

Maud Reiter, Staffan Torssell, Sandra Lee and David W. C. MacMillan,  Chem. Sci., 2010, 1, 37
DOI: 10.1039/c0sc00204f
RSC Prospect Icon Enhanced HTML article available

graphical abstract image (ID: c0sc00204f)

A concise enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-frondosin B is described which requires a total of three chemical steps. X-Ray crystallographic data, deuterium labeling, and chemical correlation studies provide evidence as to the correct absolute stereochemical assignment of (+)-frondosin B.

Encapsulation of the uranyl dication
Stephan Beer, Orion B. Berryman, Dariush Ajami and Julius Rebek Jr.,  Chem. Sci., 2010, 1, 43
DOI: 10.1039/c0sc00116c

graphical abstract image (ID: c0sc00116c)

We report the application of self-assembly to the sequestration of uranyl ion. The assembly presents the ion with convergent carboxylate ligands, isolates it from solvent, encapsulates it with aromatic panels and allows its extraction from aqueous solutions in the presence of excess brine.

DOI: 10.1039/c0sc00198h

graphical abstract image (ID: c0sc00198h)

A nano-sized M12L24 coordination sphere coated with 24 hexapeptide aptamers was efficiently self-assembled from 12 Pd(II) ions and 24 bent ligands. The high density of aptamers covering the sphere resulted in irreversible immobilization on a Ti surface.
