Recombination of atoms at surfaces. Part 10.—Nitrogen atoms at pyrex surfaces

M. L. Rahman and J. W. Linnett

Smith's side-arm method and Rayleigh's afterglow method have been employed to study the recombination of nitrogen atoms at Pyrex surfaces. The recombination process is predominantly first order at about 0.1 mmHg pressure. At high pressures a higher-order process contributes towards the recombination reaction on Pyrex. The discussion of these results in relation to those obtained by other workers has led to the conclusion that the recombination reaction is a mixture of first- and second-order processes. The value of N for Pyrex was 6 ± 3 × 10–6.
