Celebrating Supramolecular Chemistry

29 January 2007

The February 2007 special issue of Chem Soc Rev celebrates two landmark anniversaries in the field of Supramolecular Chemistry.

Forty years ago, the first of Charles Pedersen's papers on the synthesis and metal binding properties of crown ethers was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society

Twenty years later, in 1987, Charles Pedersen, Jean-Marie Lehn and Donald Cram were awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry in recognition of their pioneering work in Supramolecular Chemistry.

Supramolecular special issue

"This promises to be a landmark issue that will surely stand the test of time as a seminal contribution to the all-important area of supramolecular chemistry"
- Jon Sessler, University of Texas at Austin

This dual twentieth/fortieth anniversary celebratory issue draws together a cross section of the most relevant topics in supramolecular chemistry today, in a series of easy-to-read and fully updated tutorial reviews, authored by an impressive list of pioneering researchers in the field.

"I once heard Donald Cram predict that in the 21st century more than half of all chemists will work on topics that fall under the banner of supramolecular chemistry. In my opinion, his prediction is becoming a reality."
- Brad Smith, University of Notre Dame, IN
The issue encompasses a wide selection of exciting topics, including crystal engineering, transport in biological membranes, protein-protein interactions, DNA recognition and new interlocked materials and, according to Guest Editor Dr Phil Gale, reflects the expansive arena now covered by supramolecular chemistry.

"The issue augurs well to be a precious help for students as well as specialist researchers wishing to get a quick update on a specific topic."
- Javier de Mendoza, ICIQ, Tarragona, Spain
Celebrating supramolecular chemistry at its best, this special issue promises to both provide a quick, effective way for practitioners in the field to catch up on the latest developments and, over the longer term, to serve as a kind of text book for students and others wishing to come up to speed on the subject. To quote contributing author Jon Sessler, "This duality stands to make this special issue not only timely but also, to a certain extent, timeless.

But don't take our word for it: why not judge for yourself?
